It’s time to get those projects done

Welcome to 2019, the last year of the decade! A year for change and a year to get those projects around the house finished. 2018 was an extremely busy year with absolutely no slow periods. February marks 10 years of serving customers with handyman jobs. We have helped hundreds of people do all sorts of small jobs around their houses. Also, since 2015 we have been an authorized Home Services provider for Amazon, installing and assembling a lot of products purchased by their customers. We are a top-rated handyman repair and maintenance company for Amazon and Sedgwick County!

Use the best!
There are several handyman businesses in town. You have options. But when you choose Wichita Handyman, you’re choosing a proven name, reputation, and expertise. We also have many tools that aren’t in a standard homeowner’s toolbox, and liability insurance — things most “handymen” don’t have. We are also registered with the State of Kansas and Accredited with the Better Business Bureau. Our professional handyman company is NOT a franchise.

Tell me more:
We’re in the process of updating the “services” page to better reflect the kinds of jobs we can provide. Check back to see if there’s something new or as always, if there’s something you don’t see, feel free to ask!

Thanks again to all of our customers! We look forward to serving you this year. Delegate the jobs you can’t get done and let us do it for you. Call, text or use the contact button. We’re also here for our first responders. During 2019, we will waive the service call fee for ALL military and first responders (past or present!). We’ve got your six.

2017 is here!

I just finished the year-end paperwork for 2016, and it absolutely amazes me when I look back at how many jobs I do for people throughout the year. There have been some pretty fun ones. Hot ones. And hard ones. But I’m so glad to have the opportunity to do each one, no matter how small it is. 2016 came and went so fast, and now I can’t believe it’s nearing the end of February of 2017 already! There are many jobs in store for the next few months that I’m looking forward to doing. Which makes me glad I don’t have any advertising other than the Better Business Bureau, because I would have to turn work away! It makes me happy to know my customers think so highly of my work and reasonable prices that they tell other people about me time and time again. So my thanks to all of you for helping my business succeed each year.

The one thing changing this year is the trip charge. It’s been the same for the last three years, but I am at a point that I need to raise it to keep up with ever increasing costs on my end to do business. Starting April 1, 2017, the new trip charge will be $12. It’s only a one time charge per service call (as in if I’m at your house 3 days in a row, there’s only one trip charge, not a per-day charge). The one thing that won’t change is quality. That will always stay the same.

Let me know how we can help you change or maintain your home. Estimates and advice are free! Call or email to schedule a visit to your home. Have a great 2017!

As always, we are Reasonable. Responsible. Reliable.

Better Business Bureau Accredited

Wichita Handyman LLC has recently been accredited by the Better Business Bureau.  We always strive for complete satisfaction from our customers.  We have undergone an assessment by the BBB in order to show our customers just how serious we are about gaining your trust that we will do what we say we will; being Reasonable.  Responsible.  Reliable.

When customers search for Handyman on the BBB website, they’ll find we are only one of two accredited handyman businesses in the Wichita area.  One is a big company that charges big dollars.  The other is our business ready to help with your small handyman projects around your house. Don’t trust your home to a guy you found on Craigslist.  Let us come and show you the difference in having a professional take care of your projects. Give us a call or hit the contact button at the top of the page and let us know how we can make life easier for you – the right way. And thanks for supporting a Wichita area small business.

Summer Projects

Summer is Here!

Gettin’ Hot Yet? I have your summer project ideas right here to keep you cool inside and let me do the sweatin’!

I have had lots of calls for window air conditioning units.  It’s a great way to cool a particular room that is warmer than others during the summer, or cool a larger portion of your house if you don’t have a central AC unit.  There are so many to choose from, so let me help you figure out which size you need for the square footage you need to cool. And contrary to popular belief, many window AC units these days aren’t as energy sucking as they used to be. In fact, most of the ones I’ve installed have actually been Energy Star certified! They are also quite reasonably priced.

Don’t fight the summer heat – stay cool and comfortable! I’ll be glad to give you a same day quote when you call or email me.

It’s also that time of year to be spending plenty of time outside with friends and family.  Is your deck ready for the traffic? Are there lots of splinters and it hasn’t seen any stain or sealer in years? Let’s do it! I’ve got several planned to completely re-sand, re-stain and re-seal.  And it’s much cheaper to do some maintenance on it now than to have to tear it all out and redo it!   We can also power wash and re-stain if you prefer.

And don’t forget about the structural stability! Let us check our your loose, creaky or warped boards to make sure no one gets hurt while enjoying the summer on your deck. We can also fix your warped handrails and top rails.

Did you clean your gutters earlier in the spring? Have you noticed them running over or worse – water damage on your soffits? Let me get up there and get that flowing correctly to reduce the chances of damage to your home. We can even install some protective barriers over the gutters to greatly reduce the amount of debris that builds up year-round.  Already have damage? Let me come assess what needs to be replaced and repaired to keep it from getting worse!

One last idea to make your house look great this summer: Spiff up your front door!  I will take the door off, give it a good scrubbing with soap and water, sand as needed, and put a fresh coat of paint on it. It’s amazing how inviting a good looking front door can be to your friends and family! We can touch-up the paint around the trim and jamb too so it will look like you have a brand new front door!

Of course this is only a few ideas to get you thinking about what you need around the house this summer. Check out my (almost) all-inclusive list of services we provide, and of course the new “Remodel Ideas” page. There will be more added soon, so add your email address at the top of the page and stay apprised of specials and new additions!  Thanks for reading and enjoy your summer!!

Bringing a fence back to life

This is a fence project I recently completed for some customers in NW Wichita.  This fence was 156 linear feet! It was long.  It took about 4 hours to pressure wash all the old weathered look and make it shine again.  Some of the neighbor’s fence had already been stained a couple of years ago (sprayed on) and didn’t look great. Some of the fence had fairly new boards, but had not been treated at all.  The whole thing was power-washed.  The next day when it was dry we rolled on an entire 5-gallon bucket of Sherwin Williams HouseScapes semi-transparent stain. It came out beautifully.  Just as a reference, labor for the entire thing comes to about $3.50 per linear foot.  A gallon of Sherwin Williams stain covers 100-200 square feet and it’s $50 a gallon plus sundries. But when you see the results — it’s definitely worth it!

Give the gift of home repairs!

*Don’t forget that gift certificates are perfect when you don’t know what to get someone!*

Wichita Handyman is now offering gift certificates!

For most homeowners it usually comes down to one of two reasons why projects don’t get done 1) There’s never enough time to get to it, or 2) you need a special tool or the know-how to do it.

We have the tools and the know-how to get it done — so help someone special in your life get their projects done!

Give a gift certificate to:

*A family member who can’t afford home repairs

*Single moms

*Aging parents or grandparents

*Your spouse as an incentive to get things crossed off that to-do list!

Gift certificates are absolutely perfect for Christmas!  Father’s Day!   Mother’s Day!   Birthdays!   Anniversaries!

Here’s how it works:

We will run an early holiday special this year (2015) of 10% off any dollar amount you wish to buy. It’s hard to just assign a dollar amount to a certificate because every job is different.  Some jobs are tougher and take more time, materials and tools to get the job done.  But some are “in-and-out” and not that complicated.  Some jobs are bid by the job and we use a nationally known book to help assist in determining the cost.  Other odd jobs that aren’t listed could be charged at an hourly rate.  If you want to get a certificate for someone, call or email first and let us know what you’re thinking the project may be that the person needs done.  From there we can give you an approximate dollar amount to buy.

Another option would be if you don’t know what project the person has planned but just want to give them say $100 towards a project, we could do that too.  They can be issued in any denomination you would like.

All materials for the job are extra (unless we discuss this when the certificate is purchased.)  The certificates will be good for one year from issuance, are subject to our scheduling,  and are non-refundable. Please make sure the job you need completed or the person you’re buying for is (most likely) something on the list of our services provided.

Fill out a contact form, give us a call or shoot an email and we’ll help you figure out what gift certificate will work best for you!

New Fee starting April 1

Unfortunately, thanks to the rapidly rising costs of gas, business liability insurance & pulling the tool trailer to every job, my usually low rates have to change. I’ve decided not to raise the hourly rate, but beginning April 1st, 2014, there will be a $8 fee added to a service call bill to help offset the costs.  If I will be working multiple days at your home, this price will be adjusted and included in the bid.  And of course coming to your house to bid your job will still be free.  Any questions about this I’ll be glad to speak with you. Just call.

Spring Fever?

Spring Fever?  We all have it!  After so many days of snow, ice, cold & wind makes all of us ready to see the sun and break out the t-shirts and shorts.  Since spring is such a fun time of year to watch everything turn green again, we have some suggestions for you to get some things done outside so your house looks great, and you can move on to bigger and better things!

Ready to get started!?  Let’s do it!  Contact us and we’ll get it done.

I have a feeling since the last part of winter was a little milder, we’re going to see warmer weather sooner and last longer this year. Although it’s not at the top of your list at the minute, NOW is the time to buy window and portable air conditioning units!  Because as we all know if you walk into Home Depot in mid-July, you’re very unlikely to find a window air unit you want.  Of if there are any left, it’s top of the line and way more money than you wanted to pay.  My supplier has just put ALL OF THEIR UNITS on sale.  Here’s what I can get, and some I can even beat Home Depot’s prices:

  • LG Window Air Conditioners,

  • LG Window Combo Heat/Air Conditioners,

and a new brand (actually made by Haier)

  • “Commercial Cool” Window Air or Combo Units

  • Commercial Cool Portable Air or Combo Units also!

  • And now in 2014 I can get Frigidaire Window Air or Combo Units

I am really psyched about the new options with the window units.  Last year I installed a few for people, and while they were happy about being cool in the summer, they weren’t too thrilled about the unit just having to sit unused during the winter. But now with these combo units, you can use them year-round! (And even though they’re named “Commercial Cool”, they’re for residential use).    I can get some larger units as well for 240V if you have a larger shop or garage to cool.    But let me explain this to you:

Some units start as low as $149! I have special brackets to use, even if you’re on a second or third story building, and will ensure your window unit is safe and water-proof no matter what style of window you have.

Send us the size of the room you want to cool (e.g. 10′ x 10′) and I’ll tell you what size of unit you need. Then add if you want one with the heat option too, and we’ll be over to get it in fast, efficient, and at the best price of the entire year!

Also, don’t forget to have us come clean out your gutters if you didn’t get it done this fall. The spring rains will be a-comin, and it’ll be a disaster if the gutters are full.  We have already had one call from a customer that gutter has a leak and has been peeling the paint from his house. We can fix those problems too!  Too much moisture leads to bugs, mosquitos, and even termites. Protect your home and your investment and let’s remediate any issues you have.

So get your list together of all the things that have needed to be done over the winter, hit the “contact” button at the top of the page, and tell us what you’ve got! We’ll make sure to get those projects done for you so you’ll have more free time to enjoy the spring weather!

Have a great Spring….

Kitchen cabinet roll out shelves

These are some roll out shelves we installed for a customer in Wichita this week.  They are polypropylene plastic reinforced with fiberglass and steel. They are 3 inches high and can hold 60-100 pounds of weight.  While they run $50-$60 per drawer plus installation and some minor cabinet modification, these are by far the best drawers we’ve seen. The shelves make retrieving things in the back of the cabinet so much easier, especially for the elderly or disabled. They can also be easily wiped out with a Clorox wipe.  See here for your self what sets these apart, and then call us to order some for your kitchen and get them installed.

Double Roll Out Drawers

Single Roll Out Drawer

Refurbished deck

This was a fun project.  Several summers ago when the homeowners first moved in to their house, they budgeted to do a few repairs each summer to their deck and landscaping. We sanded down the boards, replaced 4 rotten ones, and then gave everything a nice coat of Sherwin Williams Deckscapes paint/stain combo. It’s tintable so they were able to pick the color they wanted and it came out nice.  We also rebuilt their seat along the edge of the deck and stained it too.

This last summer they were ready to have all new boards installed on the main deck.  After ripping up the tired, old pressure treated lumber, we replaced it with all new already-stained brown pressure treated wood from Home Depot. They also have some pesky neighbors, so we built a lattice backdrop with pressure treated wood to help give them some privacy on spring and summer evenings.

The last picture is two custom-made planters made out of some left-over decking material. It was our gift to them for being a great customer over the years. (We also completely rebuilt the sprinkler system that was originally installed in 1983 and was in bad shape. Just don’t have pics of that big project!)

As long as it’s fairly dry for at least a week, winter could be a great time to replace your deck boards! We would be glad to come by and take a look at your project, and get everything done now so when spring sneaks up on you and you want to spend time on the deck, it’s beautiful and ready for company.  Click the contact button at the top of the page and tell us about your project.

Enjoy the pictures.

Winter Work

Happy New Year!

It’s time to get your house ready for winter, and we can help you get that done. We’ve already been working on some projects for customers to get everything winterized.  One of the biggest losses of heat during the winter is the front door. Through the constant use of the front door things get out of whack and the warm air is sneaking out! We can come evaluate where the leaks are coming from, and the best way to fix it.

Another loss of energy is through the attic. Quite a few attics are lacking in the amount of insulation needed to keep you warm this winter. We can quickly and easily evaluate how deep your current insulation is, how much more you need, and ensure there is proper airflow from the soffits.  Before we put in any new insulation, we’ll go around to each light box and insulate around the seams with fireproof spray foam to eliminate even the smallest of heat loss into the attic (because heat rises, right!?)

Let us come, DO IT RIGHT, and help you be more comfortable and save some money this winter.

Have you kept up with the new laws about light bulbs?  We have!  In January 2012, standard 100 watt light bulbs we’ve used for years were phased out and no longer sold in the U.S.   In January 2014, now 75 watt light bulbs will no longer be manufactured.  Our lawmakers in Washington have decided it’s time to help all of us slowly but surely change our ways to help reduce the amount of energy we use.  So what’s next? Time to start using more energy efficient things around our houses! Fluorescent bulbs have really come a long way since they started making them, and use a lot less energy. LED lights are also coming along, but there’s quite a few cons to using them. I can help you determine which bulbs and lamps will work the best for your needs. And don’t forget about dimmers! Most of the old style dimmer switches will not work with fluorescent bulbs. But it’s an easy replacement we can do in a snap!

While normally work starts to slow for all contractors during the winter months, our business is booming. We have so much work it’s hard to keep up with everything! But let us know what we can do for you to get your projects done. We are in the process of becoming certified with the Better Business Bureau, so all our customers know they can count on us to make things right, keep customers happy and referrals coming.  Thanks to you all for your business.  We will continue to give you all good service at a very fair price.  When it comes to your projects, you know who to count on.

When you think “I need a handyman”, think Wichita Handyman LLC for all your residential handyman needs.

Are you Carbon Monoxide Safe?

Many states around the country are enacting laws for the protection against carbon monoxide.  Kansas is not one of those states. But they should be!  Here’s why:

1. Carbon monoxide is a colorless & odorless gas that is created when combustible appliances (furnace, water heater, gas ovens) do not completely use all the gas being supplied to it.

2. MANY people die each year because one of their appliances began to malfunction and they died in their sleep because of the carbon monoxide.

3. Humans cannot detect they are being overcome by carbon monoxide until many times it’s too late.

4. Early warning systems saves lives and are worth the investment to protect your family!

We can install any type of CO or smoke detectors you need! Call or email for new pricing on battery powered units, plug-in units, and direct wire combination smoke and CO detectors.  Installation for most units will be quick and simple, and give you peace of mind knowing your family is protected. Most states recommend you install one combination Smoke/CO detector within 15 feet of sleeping rooms, and 20 feet of any gas-fed appliance.  Most homes only need 2-3 detectors.  If you have one already and it’s at least 5 years old, it’s time to replace it.

Wichita Handyman has a great selection of detectors for you to choose from — from battery operated units, plug-in units, and direct-wire into the existing smoke detectors!

We also know times are hard right now, but we also want your family to be safe.  Contact us to make sure you have what you need and to get the best pricing available!  Fill out the contact form or feel free to give us a call. We have had lots of calls lately about beeping detectors, and detectors going off. It’s very important that you have us come and inspect those for you to ensure it’s working properly. Don’t be caught off guard by the silent and deadly gas!

A friend of ours called just the other day and told us their carbon monoxide detector in their apartment went off and called the apartment complex office and notified them about it.  The office told them it was no big deal and not worry about it!! Our friends called the fire department and the firemen told them if they had gone to bed and ignored it like the office told them, they would be dead.  DON’T BE A VICTIM. Do what you have to do to be safe.

Fall Projects

Fall is upon us, and the winter weather will quickly be here too!

Do you have everything done around your house before it gets too cold?  I’ve already been getting requests to clean gutters and fix some leaks, exterior carpentry repair and sealing, and weather strips around doors and windows.  Sound familiar to you?  Now’s the time to get that stuff fixed before the snow starts.

Did you know…..

  • Gutters full of leaves that get packed down with rain and snow can cause not only leaks, but worse problems if that water ruins the wood trim or your siding. Moisture problems like that also invite termites and fungus.
  • Lots of cold air is allowed in around places you don’t know about. I can help you determine where the leaks are coming from and get them sealed up to save you lots of money this winter.
  • Having a programmable thermostat can also reduce your energy bills by allowing you to turn down the heat when you’re not home, but have it nice and toasty just before you arrive. I’ll install one and show you how easy it can be.
  • By using your ceiling fan in reverse mode, it helps re-distribute the heat sitting near the ceiling back into the room and reduces the amount of heat you have to pour into the house to stay warm. Want to replace a plain light with a ceiling fan? I’ve had several requests recently, so get on the list to get it done!
  • Have a gas fireplace? Turn off the pilot and don’t use it!! Unless you have a blower on it to help distribute the heat, or it’s an extremely small room, it costs waaaay more to run those than to just turn up the heat on the furnace! I’ll be glad to talk with you more about it, or help you turn off the pilot. Just call!

No matter your project this fall, I’ll be glad to help you with all of your needs. Usually around this time of year business starts to slow down a little. Not here! I’m still booking at least several weeks in advance.

Fill out the contact form or call today. I will make it a priority to get over to look at your project and get you scheduled as soon as possible.

Also, navigate over to ‘Are you Carbon Monoxide Compliant’ and read the important information about Carbon Monoxide alarms. I have recently installed over 25 new alarms in people’s houses to keep their families safe. Don’t wait to make sure you are safe too.

Enjoy your fall!

Since I started my business I have mainly accepted cash and check for payment of services. Once in a while I would have a customer that needed to use a credit card, and could only do that if they had a Paypal account and their card was attached to it. Not anymore!

Wichita Handyman is proud to announce we have contracted with Inuit (the creators of QuickBooks) to provide credit/debit card processing services. I have a credit card swiper that attaches to my smart-phone and sends the encrypted information for approval. How handy is that!?

I know some are strapped for available cash thanks to the current economy. If you have work you’ve been putting off on your home, get it done now and let me help you. I’m glad to offer this service to my customers.

The photos display the finished installation of a top of the line Evergrain composite deck and pathway/step lights installed over the winter of 2009. We had to rebuild most of the structure because of weather rot. But once we put the new joists on, we used a special coating on the joists to make them last LOTS longer. We also found even with 6 inches of snow on the deck, after a little shoveling and direct sunlight, that deck was dry in an hour!  Our clients were very happy!

We can install or resurface a deck at your home too. Please contact us for more information or call (316) 243-8288.
